Common questions

Do you take insurance?
The practice is out of network. We provide superbills you can submit to your insurer if your plan includes out-of-network benefits, and many plans reimburse a portion of the fee. It is worth calling your insurer and asking what they reimburse for out-of-network outpatient mental health.
Is there a sliding scale?
There are a limited number of sliding scale spots. Ask on the consultation call — if none are open, we will say so directly rather than leave you waiting.
What happens in the first session?
The first session or two is orientation: what brought you in, what you are carrying, and what you want to be different. We will talk about history and context, because symptoms usually make sense once you can see what they grew out of.
How do I choose between Jennie and Ryan?
Jennie typically works with couples, maternal mental health, self-harm recovery, trauma, and EMDR. Ryan typically works with families, men, professionals, and teens. You can compare them side by side on the appointments page, and the free consultation exists precisely to settle this — if the other would be the better fit, we will say so.
What ages do you work with?
Ryan works with clients from age 5 through adulthood. Jennie works with clients from age 10 through adulthood. Both work with parents alongside the client where that is appropriate.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. Secure telehealth is available to anyone located in California. In-person sessions are at The Bloom Room, 324 Avenida de la Estrella, Suite B, San Clemente.
What is the difference between couples therapy, family therapy, and parenting support?
Couples therapy focuses on the relationship between partners. Family therapy addresses communication and patterns across the family system. Parenting support helps parents respond to their children with more clarity, steadiness, and connection. A consultation will sort out which one you actually want.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes, with the legal exceptions every California therapist works under — situations involving imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse of a child, elder, or dependent adult. We will walk through this in the first session so there are no surprises.
Are you LGBTQ+ affirming?
Yes. The practice is trauma-informed, attachment-based, and LGBTQ+ affirming.
How is a group different from therapy?
Groups are a separate offering with their own format, schedule, and sign-up — they are not a substitute for individual therapy, and joining a group interest list is not a request for a therapy appointment. See groups.
